On September 10, the Germans launched a retreat that ended north of the Aisne River. That also began a part of the war that would be marked by trench warfare. On September 10, German chief of staff Helmuth Von Moltke ordered his forces to regroup on a front between Soissons and Verdun. On September 13, Moltke lost control of his commanders.
